Modern Account-Based Marketing (ABM) requires a comprehensive operational infrastructure that moves far beyond static target account lists and generic advertising. Organizations must carefully select their Total Addressable Market (TAM), continuously enrich Customer Relationship Management (CRM) data, and track meaningful intent signals to understand buying committee behavior. Success relies on aligning sales and marketing teams around unified metrics, such as pipeline progression and revenue attribution, rather than relying solely on vanity metrics. Furthermore, leveraging artificial intelligence can automate tedious research and reporting tasks, allowing revenue teams to focus on delivering personalized, high-value engagement to decisionmakers. Ultimately, effective ABM functions as a holistic company-wide strategy that prioritizes genuine conversations, strategic account mapping, and coordinated execution across the entire customer journey.

00:00:09: Freenes is a B to B market research company working with enterprises to optimize their campaigns with account an executive insights far beyond AI
00:00:17: And we are breaking down the absolute top account base marketing trends that our you know just buzzing all across linkedin right now.
00:00:24: basically We want to help you upgrade your go to market engine.
00:00:28: This edition is brought to you together with our partner B-to-B Marketing.
00:00:31: Don't miss out on their upcoming conference, the global ABM Conference in London!
00:00:36: Find a link of that conference in the description.
00:00:38: So yeah today's deep dive really for you if your are a B-To-B marketing professional who just completely tired from generic outreach?
00:00:46: Oh absolutely.
00:00:47: I mean we're going to explore how ABM is fundamentally shifting it not just a campaign tactic anymore
00:00:54: Right It Is A Companywide Operating Model.
00:00:56: Now
00:00:57: Yeah.
00:00:57: And before we can talk about running plays or anything, We really have to look at the plumbing because old school ABM where you just pick five hundred accounts and spam them that is Just like painting a house That Is currently on fire?
00:01:10: That is A great way To put it.
00:01:12: I mean It does not matter how good The ads Look if the internal systems are just completely broken
00:01:18: Exactly.
00:01:19: Which brings us to this Really interesting Framework from five osa resty.
00:01:23: he maps out the Five rev op stages that You actually need.
00:01:27: Oh right, the five stages.
00:01:28: Yeah so it starts with TAM mapping So finding your total addressable market and your CRM enrichment
00:01:35: Which is so critical because if you skip that You are just guessing
00:01:39: Totally!
00:01:40: After that It moves to signal tracking then enablement And finally reporting...you have all five
00:01:46: Right.
00:01:46: in layering onto that Henry Shuck had this baseline rule That I thought was fascinating.
00:01:51: He says he needs a true list of accounts and named buyers
00:01:54: Not just vague persona
00:01:56: Exactly, not like companies that look this.
00:01:59: It has to be a concrete specific list of accounts everyone in your organization can instantly find.
00:02:05: I mean...that sounds simple on the surface but practically getting sales and marketing to agree is really tough!
00:02:12: And then you get into the hiring pie for this plumbing which Jan Sarfati posted a really contrarian take-on.
00:02:19: Oh yeah about when to hire.
00:02:21: Yeah
00:02:22: he said do NOT hire an ABM strategist too early Like, if you were at the seed stage... You do not even need an ABM hire yet.
00:02:31: Wait really?
00:02:32: Because I feel like founders rush to hire that role!
00:02:35: They DO!
00:02:35: But his point is…you just need prove your product solves a real pain first — you bring in strategy hires later when you actually need to replicate what already works.
00:02:46: That makes a ton of sense.
00:02:48: Real ABM means knowing exactly who's paying attention.
00:02:52: this week It IS ALIVE infrastructure
00:02:55: Absolutely.
00:02:56: So, okay once you have that foundational plumbing in place You obviously need to know what flows through it.
00:03:02: Right which means we have to talk about signals.
00:03:05: Yeah but We Have To Be Honest Here.
00:03:07: Not All Signals Are Created Equal.
00:03:09: Oh
00:03:09: For Sure.
00:03:10: Ronit Yawakar Actually Pointed Out The Big Problem here.
00:03:14: Most Signal Providers are Literally Just Reselling the Exact Same Stale Shared Data Everyone.
00:03:20: It Is Basically Useless.
00:03:22: IT IS!
00:03:23: Like
00:03:23: if a signal says, oh they hired her rep six months ago.
00:03:26: That is completely useless by the time it reaches a sales team today!
00:03:30: Right which brings me to this amazing contrast Jack Porter shared.
00:03:34: he gave a really powerful example of this exact problem.
00:03:37: Oh
00:03:37: The intent data thing?
00:03:38: Yeah
00:03:38: so imagine you pay one hundred and twenty thousand dollars for a generic intense signal
00:03:43: Which is crazy amount money.
00:03:45: It's just that someone at a massive university searched for ABM platforms.
00:03:50: That could literally be an intern doing a class project.
00:03:53: Exactly, or and this is the contrast you can look at two dollar signal
00:03:58: A two-dollar signal?
00:04:00: Yeah!
00:04:00: A public job posting.
00:04:01: like if a company posts a job for zero to one head of field sales And they are tasked with building a playbook from scratch.
00:04:09: Oh wow that tells you everything
00:04:10: Right.
00:04:11: it tells you They need tools then training and processes.
00:04:14: Literally right now...that's real intent.
00:04:17: But wait I have question on With AI scaling everything, you know scraping every job board in seconds.
00:04:23: Aren't teams just drowning in these signals?
00:04:25: Yeah it is a huge problem.
00:04:27: reps are getting hundreds of alerts today.
00:04:30: So how do you actually filter that?
00:04:32: Well Kyle Poyer has great strategy for this.
00:04:34: He says the competitive moat Is not buying third party data anymore
00:04:39: Because everyone has that.
00:04:40: Exactly The Moat is combining with your own first-party data.
00:04:44: Oh!
00:04:45: That's smart
00:04:46: Yes.
00:04:46: So for example, you pair a closed lost opportunity from your own CRM which is your first party data with leadership change from the third-party source.
00:04:55: Oh I see.
00:04:55: so it triggers highly relevant reactivation.
00:04:58: play
00:04:59: You got it!
00:05:00: You are not just reaching out cold...you're reaching out in historical context that your competitors do NOT have.
00:05:07: That's such good tactic.
00:05:08: And by the way if you are listening and finding these tactics valuable.
00:05:13: Just take a second to hit subscribe on the feed so you do not miss our future deep dives.
00:05:17: Yes, definitely subscribe.
00:05:20: So we have the infrastructure and we had the signals but We have to ask who are those signals actually coming from?
00:05:26: This is where I think The biggest blind spot in ABM Is right now.
00:05:30: it is the buying committee.
00:05:31: It totally is.
00:05:33: John Miller frame this shift perfectly.
00:05:34: he said leads Are just way too narrow because a lead as one person But then accounts are two broad Because that is the whole company.
00:05:42: So what is the middle ground?
00:05:44: The sweet spot, which he calls the Qualified Byting Group.
00:05:48: Okay because Alan Gonsonauer broke down math on this and it's actually staggering.
00:05:53: What did that say?
00:05:54: Well we usually build playbooks for a neat little committee of maybe six people but Forrester data shows typical million dollar plus deals involve thirteen internal stakeholders.
00:06:05: Thirteen?
00:06:05: Thirteen internal and nine external influencers.
00:06:09: That is massive room to win over.
00:06:11: It is huge.
00:06:13: And the crucial insight here, is that marketers are trained to sell on FOMO – you know fear of missing out
00:06:18: Right pushing urgency
00:06:20: Exactly.
00:06:20: But buyers in a group that big Are actually driven by FOMU.
00:06:24: Fear Of Messing Up?
00:06:26: Oh wow!
00:06:27: Fear of messing up
00:06:28: Yeah because every added stakeholder In That Room Is just another person who was terrified of career risk.
00:06:33: They do not want To champion A tool that fails.
00:06:36: That completely changes the psychology of The Pitch and actually Travis Connell brought a demographic reality check into this that I think is super important.
00:06:44: Oh, the Gen Z data?
00:06:45: Yeah!
00:06:46: Sixty-seven percent of these million dollar plus deals involve a Gen Z or millennial buyer
00:06:51: Which is wild because iIthinka lot of reps still ignore them.
00:06:54: They do they treat them like they are just there to take notes But they aren't taking notes...they built the shortlist..They ran the sandbox trial.
00:07:02: Right....they did all the actual research.
00:07:03: Exactly
00:07:04: If you treat that millennial buyer like an admin, You lose the deal before it even reaches the VP.
00:07:09: But...that begs the question.
00:07:11: That is a massive room of people with totally different agendas.
00:07:15: How do you cut through all that noise to actually close the deal?
00:07:18: Well Wendy Lee shared A really phenomenal approach To this-you have to find The person who holds the ultimate risk.
00:07:24: The ultimate risk Like..the bag holder
00:07:27: Basically yeah.
00:07:28: She gave An example.
00:07:29: in cyber security They were constantly pitching IT guys And deals were stalling
00:07:33: Because the IT guy just cares about the features.
00:07:36: Right, so they stopped and asked if a breach happens who actually gets fired?
00:07:40: Who has to answer to board?
00:07:42: And it was not the IT Guy.
00:07:43: Nope It Was The Chief Risk Officer.
00:07:47: Oh wow
00:07:48: Yeah.
00:07:48: So They Changed Their Entire Pitch To Focus On Board Level Risk Mitigation For The CRO.
00:07:53: That Single Insight Changes The Entire Dynamic.
00:07:56: that
00:07:57: makes total sense because If You Protect The Person With Most Risk The Rest Of The Committee Just naturally aligns to support them.
00:08:03: Exactly,
00:08:05: but honestly tracking thirteen stakeholders monitoring signals customizing all this messaging it requires just an immense amount of manual labor
00:08:15: which is exactly why everyone Is looking at AI right now?
00:08:18: To carry the load
00:08:19: Right and It does work in certain areas.
00:08:21: like Kathleen Booth shared This massive productivity when
00:08:25: what did she automate?
00:08:26: her team was burning hours manually researching target accounts.
00:08:30: so they used Claude to automate the target account research and do their weekly health scoring.
00:08:35: Oh, that is a perfect use case for AI?
00:08:38: Yeah!
00:08:39: She estimated it saved her team over three hundred hours in just six months.
00:08:43: That's incredible.
00:08:44: But we have talk about limits of this because Armand Welf ran a build lab at Dreamforce recently And It was huge reality check.
00:08:52: Were they AI agents right?
00:08:54: They had AI agents draft personalized opening emails.
00:08:57: While the email sounded great The AI completely hallucinated facts.
00:09:01: Yikes
00:09:01: Yeah, using stale news fabricating company stats.
00:09:05: I mean if a rep hits send on an email that congratulates the prospect of fake acquisition you are permanently locked out at account!
00:09:12: You look so lazy.
00:09:14: Exactly which is why his take away was to need human verification.
00:09:19: he called it a Send Gate.
00:09:20: A Send gate?
00:09:21: i like that.
00:09:22: yeah It basically checks the AI's claims against verified sources before humans ever even sees the draft.
00:09:27: you cannot just let AI execute outbound unsupervised
00:09:31: Which brings it all back to the ultimate human truth in ABM.
00:09:35: I love this story from Anthony Natoli.
00:09:38: Oh, This is such a good play
00:09:39: It really is.
00:09:40: So he completely forgot about digital intent.
00:09:43: for second He was trying break into massive totally unresponsive account.
00:09:47: Right they were ignoring emails calls everything
00:09:50: Yep.
00:09:50: so two weeks before Dreamforce he physically went their office San Francisco Just
00:09:55: walked right in?
00:09:56: Yeah and dropped off a box of cookies and a flyer with the receptionist showing where his team would be at the event.
00:10:02: That is amazing, you cannot put a spam filter on a box of cookies!
00:10:06: You
00:10:06: really can not... And it worked.
00:10:08: he got the in-person meetings and eventually closed the account.
00:10:11: It's just the perfect reminder that In A World So Obsessed With AI & Automation Sometimes..You Just Need To Knock On Door.
00:10:20: I absolutely love that.
00:10:22: As we wrap up i want to leave everyone with final provocative thought built by Rebecca Shet.
00:10:27: Yeah, about target accounts.
00:10:29: Right we put so much effort and budget into acquiring net new target accounts
00:10:34: Constant hunting.
00:10:35: But what if your best target account are not prospects at all?
00:10:40: Her point is that you're easiest path to revenue Is actually the white space inside of the accounts You have already won.
00:10:46: Oh!
00:10:46: Utilizing the internal advocates you've built
00:10:49: Exactly...You already had first party data.
00:10:52: they already trust you, and can point to actual ROI.
00:10:56: Expanding those accounts is so much easier than kicking down a brand new digital
00:10:59: door.".
00:11:00: That's such smart way of looking at it!
00:11:02: Stop hunting cold logos...and just expand where your are winning.
00:11:07: Exactly.
00:11:09: Well if you enjoyed this episode…new episodes drop every two weeks.
